If any of you have been over to Sarmin’s Corner lately, you may have noticed some amazing Jo Fletcher giveaways! Well, due to some unfortunate problems with Blogger, I’ll be posting the next one here.

So first off, a huge thanks to Mazarkis Williams, Jo Fletcher Books and Rod Rees! Now without further ado, the giveaway!!!

The Demi-Monde:

mail.google.com

1. A subclass of society whose members embrace a decadent lifestyle and evince loose morals.

2. A shadow world where the norms of civilized behavior have been abandoned.

3. A massive multiple-player simulation technology that re-creates in a wholly realistic cyber-milieu the threat-ambiance and no-warning aspects of a hi-intensity, deep-density, urban Asymmetric Warfare Environment.

4. Hell.

Welcome to the Demi-Monde, the ultimate in virtual reality—a military training ground and vivid, simulated world of cruelty and chaos run by psychopaths, madmen and fanatics.

If you die here, you die in the Real World . . .

In the year 2018, the Demi-Monde is the most sophisticated, complex and unpredictable computer simulation ever created, devised specifically to train soldiers for the nightmarish reality of urban warfare. A virtual world of eternal civil conflict, its thirty million inhabitants—“Dupes”—are ruled by cyber-duplicates of some of history’s cruelest tyrants: the fanatical Nazi butcher Reinhard Heydrich; Stalin’s arch executioner Lavrentii Beria; the torture-loving Grand Inquisitor Tomás de Torquemada; the Reign of Terror’s bloodthirsty mastermind Maximilien Robespierre.

But something has gone horribly wrong inside the Demi-Monde, and the U.S. president’s daughter, Norma, has been lured into this terrifying shadow world, only to be trapped there. Her last hope of rescue is Ella Thomas, an eighteen-year-old jazz singer and very reluctant heroine. But when Ella infiltrates the Demi-Monde and begins her hunt for Norma, she soon discovers the walls containing the evils of this simulated environment are dissolving—and the Real World is in far more danger than anyone knows. With the help of resistors determined to understand their world, Ella must race to save Norma and stop an apocalypse . . . but the clock is ticking.

Blending fact and fantasy, history and religion, military and existential themes, epic adventure and dark wit, dystopia and steampunk in a wholly original and driving narrative stream, The Demi-Monde: Winter is inventive fiction at its finest.

OK, so! How do you win this fine book? It’s simple… Explain a steampunk item in the comments. The winner will be chosen at random on Friday. However! Long detailed posts are the most fun to read, so you will win my gratitude for making your responses fun. Goodluck everyone!
This will be a copy of the British version with a snappier cover (in my opinion).

Thanks from,

Roger Bellini, Mazarkis Williams and the lovely ladies and gents at Jo Fletcher Books!

The Oculus Somnio: An item created by the discredited Aeronautical scientist, Dr. Ridgebury Shanks.
The device is like that of a pair of goggles but with one protruding lens and wide bulky frame. The Oculus Somnio runs on an intricate series of clockwork powered cogs, and small pistons. The aim of the item is to scan the dreams of the recently deceased, at least more so for those who have departed in suspicious circumstances. Although having its teething problems, its accuracy for piecing together the lives of the dead is renown, especially in the city of Fraythorn and its police department. However the accuracy of its use does come with a price.
Its power is quite unpredictable and may see things that sometimes have not come to pass ad Ridgebury himself once said, “it is hard to differentiate the dreams of the dead, with the visions of spirits.”
Many of its users (mainly detectives and the odd P.I) have ended up going mad; being haunted by the dreams and visions it has seen, many lawmen have terrible hallucinations I.e in the case of Detective Hiraldo Bloomsfeld, who swore he had seen his own limps sprout their own appendages and leave their once comfortable home. Because of the dangerous effects in can have the policemen that are frequent users of The Oculus Somnio are referred to as the most unkind slur, ‘The Lunatic Unit’ this name also refers to the time of the full moon, when the results (for good and bad) are often felt by The Oculus Somnio.
As for Dr Ridgebury Shanks, he will always be remembered for the triumphant invention of a spectacular (if a little dangerous) law-keeping item.

Steam punk air ship: designed in the form of a 17th century galley or “pirate ship” the air has two large helium balloons and a fan in place of its rudder.

The airship is designed for world travel, often the crew will adopt naval ranks, terms, and culture. As if the air were the sea

Flame Thrower Axe – It can be used with one hand, or with both hands, and it has a flexible trigger to spray whatever agony you may have stored in its reservoir. Wield this and be feared.

Steampunk all in one navigation system and watch. Every had one of those days where you don’t know where you’re going or what time it is. Problem solved adding a few extra gears (and honestly what can make an item appear more steampunk that that) and you have you’re very own watch with built in navigation system. This watch can tell you where you’re going and when you’ll get there.
